The information technology (IT) sector is at the top of the agenda of the state government, which was doing its best to be at the forefront of the IT revolution in the country, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said on Wednesday.
The State government is committed to create an open environment to attract investment from IT industries and foreign investors. In order to promote such Investments, IT Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are being established at Infocity and lnfovalley in Bhubaneswar, the Chief Minister said at the inauguration of the e-Odisha Summit here today.
The programme was jointly hosted by the Department of Information Technology and Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC) at Hotel Swosti Premium here. The one-day summit comprised parallel thematic track conferences on IT in Governance, IT in Education and IT in Health.
Unveiling the vision for the future of development of IT in state, Patnaik said, To accommodate future development in IT sector, particularly in Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM), the Government is also developing one IT Investment Region (ITIR) on the southern part of Bhubaneswar. State Government is taking several steps to build city as the number one IT destination among the Tier-II cities in the county.
Expressing satisfaction with IT exports from the State, the Chief Minister said it was a matter of pride that IT export from the State was more than Rs 1600 crore during the year 2011-I2, with a growth of I7 percent in comparison to the previous year.
The state government, Patnaik said, has implemented a number of successful e-Governance initiatives including e-Registration, e-Treasury, e-Commercial Tax, e-Abhijog, SAMS, e-District. e-despatch, e-municipality, etc.
The Software Technology Park of India at Bhubaneswar is one of the oldest STPIs in the country. Meanwhile, the STPI at Berhampur and Rourkela are also playing a very vital role for employment in IT sector,he said.
The Chief Minister hoped that the summit would provide a platform for exchange of experiences and ideas about the opportunities and challenges in the field of IT and the delegates from various districts would benefit from such exchange.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for IT Raghunath Mohanty said Bhubaneswar has the potential to emerge as another Silicon Valley in the next five years. “The Department of lT will be happy to observe the e-Odisha Summit annually, during this time, he said.
Secretary in the Department of IT Madhusudan Padhi was among the dignitaries present on the occasion.
