Berhampur: In a bid to create awareness about traffic rules, Ganjam district administration in Odisha has asked schools to open road safety clubs for students and educate them about rules and safety norms.

The administration has also asked parents not to let their wards below the age of 18 years to ride motorbikes and use cell phones in school.

"Road safety clubs are necessary to educate students on traffic rules," district collector Prem Chand Chaudhury told headmastres of different schools in the town.

If necessary school authorities could rope in traffic police and transport officers to educate the students about road safety, he added.

In a related move, the collector asked police officers to be strict with fitness norms of school buses and check driving license of students riding motorbikes in the town.

"School authorities have been asked to submit proposals about bus stoppages in the town. We have asked bus operators not to drive beyond 20 kmph speed inside the town," SP (Berhampur) AK Singh said.

The crckdown comes as the aftermath of the deaths of a Class X girl in road mishap, and a 18-year old girl after a branch of a tree fell on her at Bhanja Bihar.

The SP said police would strictly check fitness of school buses and movement of heavy vehicles inside the town during the no-entry hours.
