Dr. Padarabind Patra, MODERN AYURVEDIC CLINIC / APHROREZ

What is Ayurveda

Ayurveda, which literally means "The Science of Life," is the healing science from India. It has been practiced for over 5,000 years by millions of individuals to assist the body in journeying back to optimal health.

Ayurveda can be defined as a tem, which uses the inherent principles of nature to help maintain health in a person by keeping the individual&39s body, mind and spirit in perfect equilibrium with nature.

The traditional Hindu tem of medicine incorporated in Atharva Veda(the last of the four Vedas) which is based on the idea of balance in bodily tems and uses diet, herbal treatment, and yogic breathing.

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term, made up of the words "ayus" and "veda." "Ayus" means life and "Veda" means knowledge or science. The term "ayurveda" thus means &39the knowledge of life&39 or &39the science of life&39 . Ayurvedic medicine is a tem of traditional medicine native to the Indian subcontinent and a form of native medicine. The oldest known ayurvedic texts are the Susruta Sahmita and the Charaka Sahmita . These Classical Sanskrit texts are among the foundational and formally compiled works of ayurveda.

 Aim of Ayurveda.

The aim of this tem is to prevent illness, heal the sick and preserve life.

To protect health and prolong life ("Swasthyas swasthya rakshanam")

To eliminate diseases and dysfunctions of the body ("Aturasya vikar prashamanamcha")

Ayurveda studies the physical & psychic behaviour of people & prescribes ways for them to synchronize with their environment so as to live healthy , happy & inspired.

The unique combination of the three doshas in each individual has a specific influence on his/her physical, mental, and emotional tendencies. Determining which dosha(s) are dominant could help to make the right diet and lifestyle choices that will maintain balance and promote health and well-being on all levels. So Ayurvedic approach treats each individual, taking into account his/her own unique psychological, emotional, and physical conditions. Imbalances in the body are evaluated through the tem of the elements. Because our world and bodies are constantly adjusting to new environments.

Basic Principles of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is based on the premise that the universe is made up of five elements- air, fire, water, earth and ether. These elements are represented in humans by three "doshas", or energies- Vata, Pitta and Kapha. When any of the doshas accumulate in the body beyond the desirable limit, the body loses its balance. Every individual has a distinct balance, and our health and well-being depend on getting a right balance of the Tridoshas. Ayurveda suggests specific lifestyle and nutritional guidelines to help individuals reduce the excess dosha. A healthy person, as defined in Sushrut Samhita is "he whose doshas are in balance, appetite is good, all tissues of the body and all natural urges are functioning properly, and whose mind, body and spirit are cheerful".

The three Doshas or Bio-energies found in our body are-Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Vata pertains to air and ether elements. This energy is generally seen as the force, which directs nerve impulses, circulation, respiration, and elimination.

Pitta pertains to fire and water elements. This dosha governs metabolism e.g., the transformation of foods into nutrients. Pitta is also responsible for metabolism in the organ and tissue tems.

Kapha pertains to water and earth elements. Kapha is responsible for growth and protection. The mucousal lining of the stomach and the cerebral-spinal fluid that protects the brain and spinal are examples of kapha.

Ayurvedic View(Imbalance of doshas causes disease).

Vata dosha is thought to be the most powerful of all three doshas. It controls very basic body functions, such as how cells divide. It also controls mind, breathing, blood flow, heart function, ability to get rid of body waste through the intestines. Things that can disrupt this dosha are- eating dry fruit, eating too soon after a previous meal, fear, grief, staying up too late. If vata dosha is your main life force, you are more ly to develop- anxiety, asthma, heart disease, nervous tem disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, skin problems etc.

The pitta dosha controls digestion, ability to break down foods (metabolism), certain hormones linked to appetite, Things that can disrupt this dosha are eating sour foods, eating spicy foods, fatigue, spending too much time in the sun. If pitta dosha is your main life force, you are more ly to develop anger and negative emotions, Crohn&39s disease, heart disease, heartburn a few hours after eating, high blood pressure, infections etc.

The kapha dosha controls muscle growth, body strength and stability, weight, immune tem. Things that can disrupt this dosha are- daytime sleeping, eating after your stomach is full, eating or drinking items that have too much salt or water, eating too many sweet foods, greed. If kapha dosha is your main life force, you are more ly to develop asthma and other breathing disorders, cancer, diabetes, nausea after eating. obesity
